Out of almost 15,000 entries worldwide, 44 Australian artists are finalists and 73 are semi-finalists in the 2009 competition.
For a complete list of 2009 ISC finalists and semi-finalists, please visit: http://www.songwritingcompetition.com/winners.htm
For a complete list of Australian finalists, see below.
March 8, 2009 -- The US-based International Songwriting Competition (ISC) is pleased to announce its 2009 finalists and semi-finalists. Selected out of almost 15,000 entries from 100 countries, they represent all genres of contemporary music. Australian entries represent the largest group of entrants from any country next to the USA, beating out Canada for the first time ever.
ISC, now in its ninth year, is the largest international songwriting competition in the world. Over $150,000 (US) in cash and merchandise is awarded to 65 winners, including an Overall Grand Prize winner who receives $25,000 (US) in cash and over $20,000 in prizes. However, winning ISC isn't just about the cash and prizes. The recognition, exposure, and ability to access US-based music industry executives add to the reasons to enter and benefits of winning
Winners will be announced in April and are selected by ISC’s prestigious panel of judges comprised of high-profile recording artists (Tom Waits, Robert Smith of The Cure, Kings of Leon, Robbie Williams, Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20, and many more) and industry executives, including Presidents of record labels Epic, Sire, Universal Republic, Nettwerk, A&M/Octone, Alligator, and Putumayo (see complete list of judges below).
The selection process for ISC finalists and semi-finalists is rigorous as each song is carefully evaluated by a listening committee. Although the criterion for various categories differs, the selection process is the same in that ISC is looking for the very best songs, reaffirming its belief that ìit’s all about the song.î
Candace Avery, Founder and Director of ISC, states "I am continually impressed by the Aussie music scene and the creativity of its songwriters. We receive a lot of entries from all over the world, but the Australian entries seem to have an edge of creativity and originality that tops other countries. Maybe it’s the support of radio stations such as Triple J that allows independent artists to think, write, and sing ìoutside the boxî. Other markets don’t have this kind of airplay for independent artists. As a result, we eagerly look forward each year to hearing what is coming out of Australia.î
All 2009 ISC finalists' songs are currently posted online as part of the People's Voice - an online voting contest that allows the public to listen to and vote for their favorite ISC finalist. The winner of the People's Voice is selected solely by public vote and is in addition to, and completely separate from, the regular winners who will be selected by the prestigious ISC judging panel.
